Google Analytics for Mobile Site

As we know that mobile usage is increasing day by day, people had started surfing and searching via mobile for nearby places like restaurant or shopping mall. Similarly design and development of mobile website and its online presence to increase sales or get connected to customer had become advent day by day.

But main problem rose in tracking customer who had visited to site or through which search query they landed to site had become difficult, as Google Analytics uses JavaScript based code to track visitor’s data but few of mobile devices don’t support JavaScript. So Google bought new way to track mobile visitors using Google Analytics, which could be explained in blog post.

Google Analytics Tracking Code (GATC) for Mobile Websites
Steps to Install Google Analytics mobile tracking code
  1. Download the mobile tracking libraries from the Google Analytics code site at http://goo.gl/9q13i.
  2. Extract the contents of googleanalyticsformobile.zip file and copy ga.php (or ga.aspx, ga.jsp, ga.pl etc) into the root folder of your website ("/").
  3. Create Google Analytics account profile for your mobile site at www.google.com/analytics. Select "tracking for a new domain" (or new subdomain, if applicable), and enter mobile website name. Do not download JavaScript based tracking code but keep the web property ID (eg: UA-12345-01).
  4. There should be two files ending in .snippet. Open #1 (i.e. php1.snippet) in a text editor and insert the Web Property ID from step 1 in place of the text 'Account ID Goes Here', also replace 'UA-xx' with 'MO-xx'.
  5. Copy the contents of the #1 snippet to the very top of each web page you wish to track (above opening <html> tag).
  6. Copy the contents of the #2 snippet to the bottom of each web page you wish to track, just before the </body> tag. Refer to the included sample web page if needed.

You’ll also need to change the path to the ga.php file to match your website architecture:

<?php
// Copyright 2009 Google Inc. All Rights Reserved.
$GA_ACCOUNT = "MO-XXXXXX-YY";
$GA_PIXEL = "/ga.php";
function googleAnalyticsGetImageUrl() {
global $GA_ACCOUNT, $GA_PIXEL;
$url = "";
$url .= $GA_PIXEL . "?";
$url .= "utmac=" . $GA_ACCOUNT;
$url .= "&utmn=" . rand(0, 0x7fffffff);
$referer = $_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"];
$query = $_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"];
$path = $_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"];
if (empty($referer)) {
$referer = "-";
}
$url .= "&utmr=" . urlencode($referer);
if (!empty($path)) {
$url .= "&utmp=" . urlencode($path);
}
$url .= "&guid=ON";
return str_replace("&", "&amp;", $url);
}
?>

The second block of PHP code is much simpler. It is simply two lines of PHP code that reference a function in the first block of code:
<?php
$googleAnalyticsImageUrl = googleAnalyticsGetImageUrl();
echo '<img src="' . $googleAnalyticsImageUrl . '" />';?>
When both blocks of PHP work, the result is an image tag at the bottom of every page on your mobile website. The resulting HTML looks something like this:

<img src="/ga.php?utmac=MO-XXXXXX-YY&;utmn=669391585&;utmr=-&;
utmp=%2Ftesting%2Fmobile%2Findex.php&;guid=ON" />
</body>
</html>

Mobile Web Marketing – Optimizing Mobile site

Still few people don’t understand value that why should they optimize their mobile site but basic reason is that till date statistic says that 35 – 40 % of people have started searching via their mobile phone and is predicted that by end of 2011 this graph may increase to 50 % of people would search through their smart phone, so your website can function effectively as on different mobile device, it is must be made compatible with different mobile device.

Few points must be kept as mark before web design or optimizing any site for mobile device-
  • Simplify – Simple layout with easy graphics and navigation which is basic feature for mobile site, i.e. due to complex graphics and complicated mobile design you can lose your user.
  •  Resize – Navigation links and buttons should be large so that it could be easily pressed via your thumb.
  • Prioritize – lessen up content on priority basis, summarize content which could attract your visitors and make stick them to your site.
  • Technify - Creating a mobile site so maximize capability with respect to mobile design like “ Call To Action “ should be properly defined, for example if person want to call you than simple technical functionality button should be there so that they can just click and make call rather than manually typing number and then click on call and contact you.
  • Streamline – Whether your goal is to make call or sale make it simple i.e. in maximum 3 steps you can drive your customer to goal that could be defined as First STEP; Description of services and product which you provide to your customer. Second STEP; incentives which you can provide to your customers, and Last STEP drive your customer to goal conversion page.

Above are few basic points which should be kept in mind while optimizing your site as world is going mobile so from web we have to switch to mobile optimization of site.

Optimizing Mobile Website

As we know that coming ERA is of Mobile world that is everything what you can serve to people on single click, at any location with user specific information than you can serve this mobile world or I can say make yourself stable in Mobile web design and application development industry.

 Few points which I analyzed while surfing many of Mobile site and understanding what actually user want to look in your mobile site –
  • Content specific Information – mobile user need content specific information that they don’t need long description explaining every single aspect and details about your product as they would be surfing from any middle place of market so they just need small description about product and its usability or how much far from particular location.
  •  No technical details – No technical details about your services and product should be specified.
  • No Advertisement – No big advertisement should be added on your landing page which could destruct your user from surfing your site.
  • Alt tag – Do add alternative tag for all images as many of user may block images to download site on low bandwidth, so if text are added to your images it would add positive point to serve your site.
  • Make your site user friendly that is user can easily understand what all things you want to convey through your site.
  • Testing – Do test site on different operating system i.e. Android, Mac OS, Windows etc.
  • Resolution – Liquid resolution add plus point to mobile website as it may fit to different screen size of different devices.
  • No JavaScript and Flash – to make your site workable on different devices and interface avoid use of JavaScript and flash as both interfaces are mostly not supported in many of devices, to give effect to your site and make it look more express able try to give effects via   CSS or use HTML5 in place of Flash.
  • Meta tag and Title – Both things have same importance as your desktop preferred site has as if user search via Google mobile application of course site as good and best in interface to mobile will be preferred more.
  •  URL optimization – Use keyword specific URL

Above are few points which should be considered while designing your mobile site.Article information was acknowledged by Website Design Company Ohio and Drupal Experts

With concepts of boom in Mobile technology it just click to mind that what all factors should be kept in mind while designing a Mobile Website so that it is suitable with different configuration, different width and height or different screen resolution your site perform perfectly on different devices available in market..
After deep analysis of different mobile website I came to conclusion of different strategy which should be kept in mind while designing a site for mobile –
  • Extension – extension play a important role as it give feel to user that site is specifically design for mobile so while purchasing domain for mobile site always buy .mobi extension domain for your mobile site.
  • Information – Should use minimum and only valuable information on Mobile site.
  • Images – all images used should in small in size so that they can easily be loaded and save bandwidth while loading on your device.
  • Screen size- while designing mobile site screen size should be fluid so that it can fit perfectly according to different device.
  • Table and Flash – Avoid use of Table and Flash in Mobile site as Table structure is not supported by all mobile browsers and In case of Flash user have to purchase plug-in of flash to activate on their device.
  • CSS – Try to use all effects of highlighting and bolding with help of CSS or J-query
  • Jquery – For applying visual effect to your Mobile website if you are applying J-query apply it to bottom of page so that if device browser doesn’t support J-query could be loaded and effect of J-query applicable to bottom of page.
  • Color –High Contrast and Bold color should be used as it would be easy for user to view in harsh sunlight.
  •  Navigation – Use of navigation should be simple so that user can easily navigate from one page to another.
  • Fonts – Use simple mobile browser font so that it don’t give any font error in different device.
  • Testing – before making your site online do test it on all basic handset and different mobile browser.
  • W3C validation – do check your mobile site on W3C mobileOK validator for any coding error.
